Another superb breakfast this morning at the Altrer Keller to get us up and out for our 10am departure for Bamberg. We caught 3 connecting trains this morning and DB delivered on each and every one of them. We pulled into Bamberg dead on the appointed arrival time.

Last breakfast at the Alter Keller. |
We had a 25 minute walk from the train station to our hotel "Hotel Nepomuk" in the heart of old-town. The walk wasn't through the most salubrious parts of town, and the fam is already discussing the possibility of a taxi back. We made it without incident, and in swealtering 7degC heat I might add. We were shown up to our "suite" with sweeping views over the river. Pretty sweet!

No sooner had our bags hit the floor than the idea of a beery lunch was floated. We had already planned to hit the world-famous Schlenkerla Brauerei first thing, so out we trotted. Soon we were there and found a table immediately.

The first order of business was the ordering of beers, and we lost no time getting a round of our #16 bier of the trip - the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen in. They say that smoked beer, and especially the schlenkerla Marzen, is an acquired taste - that by the end of the first glass you'll be a convert. Weeeeeell, neither Katrina nor Clau could finish theirs, and while Eb and I did finish easily, I can't say it's grown on me yet. I expected bacon and got ashtray instead. I'm going to see how I like their other brews in the coming days. I did like the Schlenkerla stuffed onion for lunch though!

After lunch, Eb went to have some hotel quiet time while we wandered old town a little. Specifically I wanted to see the famous Rathaus sitting out on an island on the river. All in all a pretty gorgeous building and location.

Pictures of the Rathaus duly snapped, we turned our attentions to the christmas market at Maximillian Platz. It was still early so the markets weren't that crazy yet - and we wandered easily along the rows of stalls. I couldn't help picking up some Nuremberg Lebkuchen to munch on - dark chocolate covered and totally wonderful. Clau and I also picked up a Schaumkuss each - think of them as a snowball with or without coconut where the interior is almost runny but not quite - almost the consistency of creme. So sweet, but so delicious.

After walking the market for a good while, Katrina and Clau went off to look at some yarn while I stole off to do some crate digging in Monochrom Records. Despite my willingness to drop some serious coin on vinyl, I couldn't find anything worth justifying the purchase. But the dig sure was fun!
Soon we all found ourselves back in the hotel and talking about beer and dinner. We decided to try and grab a beer at a local microbrewery "Zum Sternla" before grabbing a Donner Kebap on the way home. As we had no reservation, Zum Sternla allowed us to quickly sit and imbibe bier #17 for this trip - Zum Sternla Schwartz Bier before being tossed out. All was well, because the Donner from Donnner Bros was superb...
